Whiplash is no laughing matter

Sadly, movies and television have minimized the possible severity of an injury like whiplash. This has caused many people not to take it seriously, which could make any damage worse.

If you are in a motor vehicle accident in which your head moves back and forth or side to side violently and quickly, you could suffer from whiplash, and that pain in your neck could indicate a serious injury, which is nothing to laugh at.

Look for these symptoms

You may not feel the full impact of your injury until hours or days after the crash. During that time, you could experience one or more of the following symptoms, some of which could continue to worsen as time goes by:

  • Neck stiffness
  • Neck pain
  • Dizziness
  • Fatigue
  • Worsening pain on moving neck
  • Numbness or tingling in the arms
  • Loss of range of neck motion
  • Tenderness or pain in upper back, shoulders or arms
  • Headache possibly originating at the base of the skull
  • Depression
  • Ringing in the ears
  • Blurry vision
  • Memory problems
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Irritability

You may not feel all of these symptoms, but even one after an accident deserves attention. Not only can whiplash be serious, but it can also indicate a bigger problem, especially if you suffer from more serious symptoms. Even a mild case of whiplash could keep you from working for a few days. Your time away from work could extend even longer if your case is more severe.

What appears to you as whiplash could actually involve a more serious injury such as a traumatic brain injury or a spinal cord injury. When it comes to your neck and back, it is better to be safe rather than sorry. A trip to the emergency room or your doctor could put your mind at ease or confirm your worst fears. However, in either case, you got a diagnosis before the situation became worse.

Look for help

If your injuries resulted from the negligence of someone else, you may be able to seek compensation for the income you lost having to stay home and recover, the current and future medical costs you incur for your treatment, and other damages Illinois law allows you to seek. A successful claim could help alleviate the stress and frustration that often accompanies the financial losses associated with injuries suffered in a car accident.
