Thousands die in preventable railroad accidents annually

Thousands of trains pass through Illinois yearly and passersby rely on the rail industry to keep them safe from accidents. This means commuters, pedestrians and motorists alike all rely on the train operator to be properly licensed, the crossing gate to operate properly and warning sounds to function correctly. When this does not happen, a catastrophic crash could occur and cause the loss of many lives.

The Federal Railroad Administration released the first report that examines factors contributing to trespassing events on railroads and how to prevent them. It found that more than 4000 pedestrians were either killed or injured while crossing the tracks, and one county in Illinois had one of the highest casualties in the country.

The organization itself recognizes that almost every casualty that takes place is avoidable and steps should be taken to reduce them. The report identified a couple of strategies that should be implemented. This includes visiting community sites to determine what circumstances contributed to the trespassing; how the organization can implement and evaluate targeted strategies; and working with stakeholders, such as law enforcement officials and railroads, to use resources and knowledge to prevent trespassing.

When a railroad accident takes place, victims of train accidents have legal options they can pursue. They have likely suffered catastrophic injuries that need medical attention and extensive property damage that needs to be fixed. The financial burden associated with a crash can be heavy and an attorney experienced in maritime and railroad injuries can help victims recover their costs.
